2019  DQ High School Invitational Hockey Tournament Rules

This tournament will be generally governed by the rules provided in this document. Since this tournament is sanctioned by the NBIAA, their rules will apply should any conflict arise.

Preliminary Round Robin Games

- Games will consist of three fifteen-minute stop time periods (flood before first and third periods).

  • Win = 2 points
  • Tie = 1 point
  • Win Period = 1 point
  • Tie Period = .5 point
  • Total of 5 points per game awarded

- If one team is ahead by five (or more) goals in the 3rd period, the remainder of the game will be played as straight time. Once straight time begins, the remainder of the game will be played with straight time regardless of the score.

Quarter and Semi Final Games

- Quarter final and Semi Final games will consist of three fifteen-minute stop time periods (flood before first and third periods). If overtime is needed, two five-minute sudden death periods will be played – the first 4 x 4 and the second 3 x 3. A shootout (3 shooters per team followed by 1 per team) will be used thereafter.

Final Game

- Final game will consist of three fifteen-minute stop time periods (flood before first and third periods). If overtime is needed, two five-minute sudden death periods will be played – the first 4 x 4 and the second 3 x 3. A shootout (3 shooters per team followed by 1 per team) will be used thereafter.

Playoff Games

The top two teams in each division plus two wild cards determined by point standings following the completion of preliminary / round robin play will advance to the quarter finals. This group of qualifying teams (6 + 2) wildcard teams will be ranked from 1 to 8 in the order of points earned through the preliminary round robin games. Number 1 position plays number 8, number 2 position plays number 7, number 3 position plays number 6, and number 4 position plays number 5 position.

The four winners then advance to semi final play. Number 1 position plays number 4, and number 2 position plays number 3, positions determined from preliminary round robin play. The two winners then advance to the final. The higher seeded team will always be home team.

In the case of a tie after preliminary round robin play, the following tie breaking rules will be used:

a) If two teams are tied……
  1. the game between the two teams
  2. goals – for minus goals against in all three games
  3. goals – against in all three games
  4. least penalized team (Minutes) in all three games
  5. coin toss
b) If three teams are tied……
  1. goals – for minus goals against in all three games
  2. goals – against in all three games
  3. least penalized team (Minutes) in all three games
  4. coin toss

NOTE: ONCE THE TEAM IS ELIMINATED IN ANY OF THE ABOVE TIE BREAKING RULES, THE REMAINING TWO TEAMS POSITIONS ARE DETERMINED BY GOING BACK TO THE a) SET OF RULES….TWO TEAMS TIED….



NBIAA

NBIAA rules will be used for the tournament.


Floods

Floods will occur after the 10 minute pre-game warm-up and during the 2nd intermission. Games will start at the times indicated on the tournament schedule. Teams should be ready to go on the ice 20 minutes prior to the game time on the schedule. This is to ensure time for a 10 minute warm up.


Sweater Colours

The Home Team will wear dark sweaters; Visiting Team will wear light sweaters for all games.
